Northern Blue Sage Smudge — Meaning, Use, and Benefits
Northern Blue Sage (Salvia azurea), also called Grandmother Sage or New Mexico Sage, is a hardy, flowering plant native to the western United States, including the Southwestern states and parts of the Rocky Mountains. It can also be grown in Northern areas as well as the North Eastern USA, often grown in sage farms for ethical uses. Its thin, bluish leaves and bright blue flowers give it a distinctive appearance, and when dried and burned, they release a mild, floral aroma similar to lavender
Cultural and Spiritual Use
While smudging is most famously associated with white sage in Native American traditions, blue sage is also used for purification and spiritual cleansing. It is valued for its soothing scent and is often chosen as a respectful alternative to white sage, especially in modern practice. In some traditions, blue sage is used for:
- Cleansing spaces, objects, or people of negative energy
- Supporting meditation and mindfulness
- Enhancing psychic awareness and relaxation
- Abundance and prosperity rituals, as it is believed to attract wealth and success
Benefits of Smudging with Blue Sage
- Mild, pleasant aroma — less overpowering than white sage, making it suitable for sensitive spaces or people
- Soothing and calming — helps create a peaceful atmosphere for prayer, meditation, or healing work
- Energy work — supports clearing and balancing the environment
- Respectful alternative — avoids using sacred white sage in some contexts
How to Use
- Prepare the bundle or leaves — Northern Blue Sage smudge sticks are typically sold in bundles of dried leaves.
- Light the tip or burn the leaves alone or on charcoal — Hold the bundle at a slight angle and light the tip with a match or lighter. We like to burn the leaves in a small cast iron cauldron, lighting just what you need, can be used wit or without charcoal (we prefer using alone).
- Smudge in a circle — Move the bundle in a clockwise circle around the space, object, or person to be cleansed.
- Let the smoke clear — Allow the smoke to circulate for a few minutes before extinguishing.
Tip: Always use sage with respect, acknowledging its cultural significance, and consider sourcing from reputable, sustainable providers to support ethical practices
